Lil’ Cliff & the Cliffhangers will be making their first appearance at a SDLI event. After a number of strong recommendation from our members, we are please to present Lil’ Cliff & The Cliffhangers. Their strong bluesy music will make for a great evening of West Coast Swing.

Band: Lil’ Cliff & The Cliffhangers

2006 International Blues Challenge Finalists Lil’ Cliff & the Cliffhangers are a four piece, blues harmonica driven wrecking crew. These knickerbockers have been singing, swinging and stinging Tri State area audiences for the last three plus years with their own special brand of blues power.

After winning the regional IBC competition, hosted locally by the Downstate Blues Society of Long Island, New York, these four professionals then took their special brand of original jump blues down to Memphis, Tennessee to compete in the annual International Blues Challenge. And wouldn’t you know it, out of literally hundreds of blues artists from all over the world the boys placed in the final top ten!

Fresh from this triumph Lil’ Cliff & the Cliffhangers are now out to support their latest indi-cd release “God Bless Women” on Shankbone Records. Through a comprehensive combination of live appearances up and down the Northeast corridor, radio airplay (wfdu, wwoz, wusb to name a few), local cable television appearances (Wes Houston Presents) as well as the most user friendly web site you could hope for (replete with mp3 and electronic press kit downloads) these blues boys knock ‘em out of their shoes and leave them dancin’ barefoot!

Dixieland music at it’s finest.

Band: Isotope Stompers Dixieland Jazz Band

The Isotope Stompers are an exhilarating seven-piece Dixieland Jazz Band whose roots are in the Northeastern United States. This music, however, comes from way down South in New Orleans where this foot-stomping music called “jazz” grew out of spirituals and marches of the Bourbon Street area. You will recognize some of the band’s popular Dixieland tunes like the rousing Tiger Rag, In the Mood, Figgity Feet, Kid’s Ory’s famous Muskrat Ramble, A train, the sad and moving St. James Infirmary Blues or The Tin Roof Blues.

The emphasis is on what is known as “revival jazz”, the traditional New Orleans-style music spiced up with greater drive and tempo for dancing.

They will have you clapping your hands and tapping your toes…for THE ISOTOPE STOMPERS celebrate Mardi Gras, New Orleans style, all year long!  image

Friday, Jan 19, 2007 • Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Concert • IMAC

Posted by Tom on 01/18/2007 • SwingPermalink

Not sure how we are going to stay in our seats during this performance!

On Friday, January 19th, 2007 at 7 & 9:30pm, the Inter-Media Art Center (IMAC) in Huntington, Long Island will present a concert with swinging Big Band group Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

Tickets for this performance are $40.00 ($30.00 for IMAC Members).  For tickets or further information on this performance, or on other IMAC programs, call IMAC’s 24-hour Arts-Line at (631) 549-ARTS.  Tickets can also be purchased at the theater from noon to 6PM, Tuesday through Friday, and after 2PM on the day of the performances.  For further information, call IMAC’s business office at (631) 549-9666.

Band: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Drums pound, feet tap, fingers snap.  A sultry voice begins to croon, and suddenly the horns make their entrance.  Man, these cats have got rhythm, and now the vintage-clad crowd is boogying with unharnessed glee.  Welcome to the swing scene, where the music, dance, and style of the 1940’s have been revived with a passion.  Welcome to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy!

image

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy had led the international revival of the jump of the Big Band era, with a sound that is not just big and bad, but huge and awesome!  In the rich traditions of musical masters Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has jumped into the spotlight of the swing dance craze with a brassy, updated and upbeat style of jazz.

Their credits include performing as the halftime entertainment at the Super Bowl, Orange Bowl, The White House, Billboard Music Awards and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.  The group’s videos are routinely featured on MTV and VH1.  The band’s biggest break came when they were cast to be the musical focal point of the movie “Swingers”.  With a truly contagious sound, rhythm and lyrics that bring passion back into music, Big Band Voodoo Daddy will feed your soul.

Venue: Intermedia Arts Center Theater

Intermedia Arts Center Theater

370 New York Avenue, Huntington, NY

http://www.imactheater.org/

Take the Long Island Expressway to exit 49N or the Northern State Parkway to exit 40N. The exit sign will say Huntington Route 110. After a few miles you will cross Jericho Turnpike. Route 110 will change its name to New York Avenue (but will remain Rte 110). After a couple of more miles, you’ll pass the Huntington train station on your right. About a mile past the train station at 370 New York Avenue, between Carver and Elm Street, still on Route 110 and right in the middle of the block, you’ll see a big old theater building with a flat marquee up against the building. That’s IMAC. We suggest you drive past IMAC to our north corner, Elm Street. Make a right up Elm and you’ll find a large free municipal parking lot. Park and walk back to New York Avenue to enter the theater.

By Train

If you’re traveling by train, take the Long Island Railroad to Huntington (the last stop on the Huntington line). Take a taxi to IMAC, 370 New York Avenue. Taxis and trains run all night. For more information you can call IMAC business office Tuesday through Friday 11 am to 6 pm and Saturdays of performances after 2 pm at (631) 549-9666 or e-mail at

**** UPDATE 11:21 AM on 2/13/2007 - Due to the possibility of snowy and icy roads this evening, we are canceling our dance this evening, February 13th. There will be NO BAND and we will not be meeting at Brennan’s this evening. We will be rescheduling with Cliff sometime in the future.

While it will be only the 2nd Tuesday of the month, Lil’ Cliff and the Cliffhangers will nevertheless be performing for us on February 13th, 2007.

What can be better then taking your honey to a movie and dancing on Valentine’s Day?

Found this on the Cinema Arts Centre website. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Valentine’s Day Ballroom Dance

Enjoy the sublime Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the timeless classic:

SWING TIME

Followed by a Champagne/Dessert Reception & Free Lesson in Ballroom Dancing courtesy of the award-winning dancers from The Ballroom of Huntington!

Dress to the 9’s and Swing the Night Away with Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and more!

Swing Time opens with John “Lucky” Garnett (Fred Astaire), a gambler and professional dancer, arriving late to his own wedding. Still in tails, he hops a freight for New York , where he gets smitten by dance instructor Penny Carroll (Ginger Rogers). Following her to the studio, Astaire poses as a neophyte, but soon bursts into a dazzling display of terpsichorean skill. Impressed, the studio offers them an audition at the famed Silver Sandal nightclub. Arguably the peak of the Astaire-Rogers partnership, the dancers’ perfect blending of song, dance, wit, and decor only improves with time. Directed by George Stevens (1936, 103 min.)

* Keep your eye out for Appletree Lane on your right-hand side.
* All Saints Episcopal Church will be about 50 feet past Appletree Lane on your right.

It’s a big complex of turn-of-the-century buildings. Head down the driveway on the far right. It will lead you to a parking lot in the back. The large stone building you pass on your way to the parking lot in the back is the studio. We are directly upstairs from the daycare.

Basically, once you turn off the LIE and head north, that is the only turn you need to make. Just make sure it is Lakeville Road and NOT Community Drive

FROM THE NORTH:

* Take the Cross Island Parkway South to the LIE East; follow directions above

Lil’ Cliff is back! Join us at Brennan’s for a great event.

John & Shannon will be teaching a fundamentals of swing lesson at 8:00PM.

Ithaca Lindy Reunion

The former capital of Lindy Hop welcomes you back for a weekend of Lindy Hop workshops with Peter Strom and Ramona Staffeld!  As well as the array of beginning to advanced Lindy Hop workshops, there’s a blues workshop and an advanced critique class limited to 20 dancers.

We have the amazing fortune to have the Boilermaker Jazz Band from Pittsburgh for our Friday dance.  They are beloved by Lindy Hop and Balboa enthusiasts all over the country and play at top events everywhere.

On Saturday evening, experience one of Ithaca’s favorite bands, Djug Django.  They are known for their tight rhythm and choppin’ guitars that will make you want to move!

Late night DJ blues dance parties will be held at historic Ithaca homes with DJs Mike Thibault and Dhruv Bhargava.

Ithaca’s beautiful scenery will be featured in a Saturday afternoon group hike to Taughannock Falls.  Find out for yourself why we all sport “Ithaca is Gorges” T-shirts.

Early registration discount is available if your check is received by April 10th.  Check must be received by April 1st if you would like a Reunion T-shirt.

Posted by Tom on 06/04/2007 • SwingPermalink

Ron Hammond and the Isotope Stompers Dixieland Jazz Band are back for another fun filled evening of Swing Dancing.

They will have you clapping your hands and tapping your toes…for THE ISOTOPE STOMPERS celebrate Mardi Gras, New Orleans style, all year long!  image

Their repertoire of witty songs with moving yet often bawdy lyrics and catchy 4 part vocal harmony always draw large crowds.
The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn recently won a nationally televised contest called “Subway Idol,” which was a month long feature on FOX’s “The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet” where they had the privilege of performing live on four separate occasions. As the winners the band will be recording their next album at Quad studios in conjunction with the legendary Hit Factory recording studios in New York City.
Some of their more notable performances include The 2006 “Lincoln Center Out Of Doors Roots of American Music Festival,” The 2006 “Peace Boat Music Festival” at the United Nations in New York City, winning a Battle of The Bands competition hosted by goswingdancing.com against Joe Battaglia & The New York Big Band in May 2007 and a huge swing party at SOL in New York City hosted by Swing Remix in June 2007.
The Blue Vipers are Billy Nemec-guitar/vocals, Chris Pistorino-upright bass, David Langlois-washboard percussion, Sam Hoyt-trumpet.
