Saturday, Jul 2, 2011 • Special Intermediate Workshop - Connection & Musicality •
Sarah & Gilles are both excited and sad to leave Long Island. Before they go, they wanted to give a little something back to the dance community and the Moose Lodge. For several months you’ve told us that you want more advanced instruction. So Sarah & Gilles have will be having a special 3 hour workshop designed to show you how to connect more with your partner, move better with the music, and put a whole lot of zest & sizzle into your swing dancing. All proceeds of this workshop will be donated to Mooseheart, the Moose lodge’s charity to support underprivileged children.
Date: Sat, July 2nd
Time: 3-6:30 pm
Cost: $20 prepaid, $30 at the door.
The first part of the workshop will focus on CONNECTION, one of the most important concepts to expand your ability to lead or follow.
The second half of the workshop will focus on MUSICALITY, giving you some new insight and options to move and play with the music and your partner.
Note: This is an intermediate lesson. The basic swing pattern will NOT be taught during this workshop. We assume you know that just fine. In fact, we hope to mess with that quite a bit during this workshop!

Edward deCorsia and New York’s Most Dangerous Big Band
Born of the love of Big Band jazz, producer and trombone player, Edward deCorsia, began searching for an ensemble of local musicians who would be as at home playing “In the Mood” as they would Latin Rocking a pop tune by Santana. He set out to find and network with all of the best reading musicians he could collect for this musical undertaking. During the search, he called upon musicians and friends who had played together as far back as 1974 for a road band that performed at Expo (The World’s Fair) in Montreal, Canada. Some of the original players were as young as 16, some were in their seventies!

Steeped in hot jazz, salty stride piano, and the kind of foot-stomping blues Louis Armstong and Fats Waller used to make, the Hot Sardines’ love of almost century-old sounds also extends to Parisian music-hall chansons. A tap dancer and guest accordionist Mira Stroika round out this special Bastille Day fête. In the spirit of Bastille Day, dress in your French-inspired best: Parisian coquette, Marie Antoinette, Moulin Rouge, Folies Bergère, or even street mime. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.

Isotope Stompers Dixieland Jazz Band
The Isotope Stompers are an exhilarating seven-piece Dixieland Jazz Band whose roots are in the Northeastern United States. This music, however, comes from way down South in New Orleans where this foot-stomping music called “jazz” grew out of spirituals and marches of the Bourbon Street area. You will recognize some of the band’s popular Dixieland tunes like the rousing Tiger Rag, In the Mood, Figgity Feet, Kid’s Ory’s famous Muskrat Ramble, A train, the sad and moving St. James Infirmary Blues or The Tin Roof Blues.
The emphasis is on what is known as “revival jazz”, the traditional New Orleans-style music spiced up with greater drive and tempo for dancing.
They will have you clapping your hands and tapping your toes…for THE ISOTOPE STOMPERS celebrate Mardi Gras, New Orleans style, all year long!

Vince Giordano and His Nighthawks - In 30 years as a bandleader, Vince Giordano has become the authority on recreating the sounds of 1920s and ‘30s jazz and popular music. “I just love the energy of the early jazz,” says Giordano. “I wanted to recapture some of that.” Early appearances with Leon Redbone and on the Prairie Home Companion and lending his talents to Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Cotton Club, led to working with Dick Hyman’s Orchestra in half a dozen Woody Allen soundtracks then as a bass player in Sean Penn’s band in Woody’s Sweet and Lowdown. He and the Nighthawks were featured in Gus Van Sant’s film Finding Forrester, in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Robert DeNiro’s film, The Good Shepherd, Tamara Jenkin’s The Savages and recently Sam Mendes’ film: Revolutionary Road, and Away We Go; plus Michael Mann’s film Public Enemies.

Wednesday, July 27th
Louis, Louis & Louis—The Prima “Big Night” is a band dedicated to the music of Louis Prima and two of his influences, Louis Armstrong and Louis Jordan! Born in New Orleans, Prima was raised on the same Dixieland influences that created Armstrong’s infectious style, jazz improvisation, a wild sense of humor and scat singing that just never stops! Prima’s genius was bringing Italian San Remo style music to the mix. Louis Jordan, another icon of jazz music and musical humor also enriched the pallet of swing music with his vocals and upbeat, humorous songs. Singer/ keyboardist and leader, Murray Weinstock’s swinging vocal musical style was set after meeting Armstrong at age 12! Along with some of the New York City’s finest musicians, Weinstock has been entertaining audiences and providing dance music with vocal harmonies that keeps people on their feet. Weinstock, has recorded and/or toured with Manhattan Transfer, Dr. John, Phoebe Snow, Howard McGhee, The Moonglows’ Harvey Fuqua and Chuck Berry, to name a few. As a composer, his songs have been featured in films and commercials, as well as the off-Broadway show Tony & Tina’s Wedding. He created a CD of dog songs called Tails of the City that was featured on All Things Considered and will be part of NPR’s CD new compilation, “Driveway Moments.”

Sunday, Aug 7, 2011 • Brian Lewis and his New Vintage Swing Orchestra @ Morgan Park, Glen Cove NY • Not a SDLI Event
This is a free outdoor concert held at Morgan Park in Glen Cove. The New Vintage Swing Orchestra plays a rich and vibrant assortment of songs crossing the generations.
The full calendar of events is available at http://morganparkmusic.org/schedule.php
New Vintage Swing Band
Much like fine champagne, The New Vintage Orchestra bubbles with an unparalleled energy and charisma that is sure to keep dancers going all night. Formed by trumpeter Brian Lewis in August of 1992, the band puts forth an incredibly diverse range of musical talent.
Featured is female vocalist Doris Anne Lewis, singing the hits of Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Dianne Schure, and many other swing singers.
The bands “Frank Sinatra” crooner is Ron D’Abruzzo who adds his own special blend to the great American standards.
The swing scene’s resurgence in the late 90’s was undeniable. The New Vintage Orchestra reproduces 1930’s and 40’s sounds using original arrangements from Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Harry James, and with special arrangements written by Brian Lewis, the band belts out the sounds of popular dance chart-toppers. Not all of New Vintage’s charts are vintage, however! They also play the hits of Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
The band has backed up such names as The Temptations, Jerry Vale, Connie Francis, Al Martino , Frankie Valli, Bob Newhart and Joan Rivers. Few bands possess the ability to set a room in motion like The New Vintage Orchestra. From the opening downbeat to the last note, screaming brass, gritty saxes, and a strong rhythm section keep the audience jumping the whole night long.
“Standards Aged to Perfection”, The New Vintage Orchestra’s debut CD release, captures the incredible versatility of the group. The album’s eleven tracks include a wide range of classics from the 1930’s and 40’s. From a foot stomping rendition of Benny Goodman’s “Sing Sing Sing” to the silky smooth lyrical lines of Doris Anne Lewis in “And the Angels Sing”, to a rousing, jazzy finale of “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In”, the band is sure to entertain, and, like that bottle of bubbly, only gets better with time.

The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn
The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn are an acoustic Dixieland, early swing, gospel and blues band, composed of resonator guitar/vocals, trumpet, homemade washboard percussion, upright bass, with the occasional addition of violin/fiddle & tenor saxophone.
Their repertoire of witty songs with moving yet often bawdy lyrics and catchy 4 part vocal harmony always draw large crowds.

As the winners the band will be recording their next album at Quad studios in conjunction with the legendary Hit Factory recording studios in New York City.
Some of their more notable performances include The 2006 “Lincoln Center Out Of Doors Roots of American Music Festival,” The 2006 “Peace Boat Music Festival” at the United Nations in New York City, winning a Battle of The Bands competition hosted by goswingdancing.com against Joe Battaglia & The New York Big Band in May 2007 and a huge swing party at SOL in New York City hosted by Swing Remix in June 2007.
The Blue Vipers are Billy Nemec-guitar/vocals, Chris Pistorino-upright bass, David Langlois-washboard percussion, Sam Hoyt-trumpet.

*Lou Margorie-freelance critic following a WPKN benefit at the Martha Clara Vineyards about Gail Storm:
“WOW...You and the boys were F....en Hot. I have never seen you with a band. I have ripped myself off for all these years. Your tough yet fragile appeal in conjunction with your heart-piercing icy hot vocals and restless but warm persona had the audience (me included) eating out of your hand and off your smokin’ 88’s. Your intensely personal lyrics whether covers or originals easily bait a melodic hook with the confidence of a Brill building pro. You are the perfect symbol of an up-jumped Blues persona. Sincere, technically gifted, committed to your roots, and by G*… worldly as hell. I know you have felt the Blues with which you so easily impart to your audience.... Your gifted ability to present truly happy music about life’s pains, anguishes, and suffering, and brief moments of glory, evidences why you are here to hear. “

The Buzzards
From the Buzzards web site....
The Buzzards are a rockabilly band out of Long Island.
Besides inciting riotous mayhem and general debauchery (not to mention occasional nudity), the Buzzards have performed at every rockabilly hot spot, including the Rodeo Bar in Manhattan and the Blue Comet just outside of Philly.
They are the house band at the Bayou in Long Island and performed at the Gold Coast Casino in Las Vegas for the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend four years in a row. They were rewarded with a standing ovation each year. They have performed at the Indy Rockabilly Rebel Weekend, the Heavey Rebel Weekender in North Carolina, and Rock n Rods in Philly. They performed for the Rockabilly Hall of Fame many times, most notably at the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s first sold out concert, in Memphis, TN.
They are the band of choice to open for national acts and received outstanding praise for their performance with the great Scotty Moore. Scotty even came out to the diner with the Buzzards after the show.
The Buzzards’ CD, “The Grand Buffet,” is still available.

Last year’s Black Tie Dance pictured above.
Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra
Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra is an ensemble steeped in the hot-dance band tradition of the Roaring Twenties. Their size ranges from a full 11-piece orchestra to smaller incarnations. They play their “Hot-and-Sweet” music anywhere that fine and eclectic tastes meet.
The Dreamland Orchestra is authentic. Arenella transcribes by hand their entire repertoire from period recordings. Their delivery, as well as their instruments, attire, and equipment — are faithfully accurate. Arenella’s strong yet vulnerable baritone lacks pretense or sarcasm. He treasures each lyric, and has faith in the songs he sings. Even the most optimisic Tin Pan Alley tune has a disarming quality in his hands.
Though certainly anachronistic, the orchestra’s presence invokes the vibrations of something unmistakably timeless. While authentic to a “T”, Michael Arenella prefers not to be labelled a recreationalist. He takes an antiquated template and infuses it with the immediacy of the present. Spontanaeity is what gave the original music of the era its magic, and it is also the primary ingredient and imprimatur of the Dreamland Orchestra.
His men are dapper dandies; hair pomaded and shoes shined. They are based in New York, which with London were the halcyon capitals of decadence. All of this allows them to capture the essence of what this music and times were all about: joy, romance, modernity, and possibility.

Solomon Douglas Trio
Solomon Douglas is a jazz pianist and bandleader, whose various bands have played at more than fifty exchanges, camps, workshops, and other events in North America, Asia, and Australia in the past ten years. His experience as a swing dancer and dance instructor gives him an understanding unique among musicians of the music that swing dancers and blues dancers like to dance to!
His influences as a pianist include Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Gene Harris, Count Basie, and Thelonious Monk. His small groups (such as the Solomon Douglas Trio) play a mixture of musical styles including blues, old-school swing, and groovy mainstream swinging jazz with tinges of bop and soul-jazz.

Lil’ Cliff & The Cliffhangers

2006 International Blues Challenge Finalists Lil’ Cliff & the Cliffhangers are a four piece, blues harmonica driven wrecking crew. These knickerbockers have been singing, swinging and stinging Tri State area audiences for the last three plus years with their own special brand of blues power.
After winning the regional IBC competition, hosted locally by the Downstate Blues Society of Long Island, New York, these four professionals then took their special brand of original jump blues down to Memphis, Tennessee to compete in the annual International Blues Challenge. And wouldn’t you know it, out of literally hundreds of blues artists from all over the world the boys placed in the final top ten!
Fresh from this triumph Lil’ Cliff & the Cliffhangers are now out to support their latest indi-cd release “God Bless Women” on Shankbone Records. Through a comprehensive combination of live appearances up and down the Northeast corridor, radio airplay (wfdu, wwoz, wusb to name a few), local cable television appearances (Wes Houston Presents) as well as the most user friendly web site you could hope for (replete with mp3 and electronic press kit downloads) these blues boys knock ‘em out of their shoes and leave them dancin’ barefoot!
