Band: Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks

“The premier barroom troubador of Eastern Long Island. That includes Montauk, the Hamptons on up to Riverhead and any town with an Indian name!”—Josh Alan Friedman.

GENE CASEY formed the Lone Sharks having moved to Long Island’s East End in 1988, having received his baptism performing in the NYC / NJ area (Mudd Club, CBGBs, Maxwell’s, et. al) the waning days of punk/new wave. The Lone Sharks became a mainstay in the late 1990s Hamptons music scene, when bars were plentiful and audiences robust and loyal. Throughout the 90s and into the new century Gene and the ever-evolving line-up of Sharks men were the house band at The Wild Rose Cafe, a Bridgehampton night spot where packed houses danced to the roots rock and swing. Several all-original albums (see below) emerge periodically to great acclaim and local internatinal indie radio play. In the course of maintaining their status as “Best of the Best” (Dan’s Papers and Hamptons Magazine) the Lone Sharks have shared billing and/or backed-up NRBQ, LINK WRAY, SLEEPY LaBEEF, WANDA JACKSON, BILL KIRCHEN, ELVIS COSTELLO, the Who’s JOHN ENTWISTLE, THE HIGHWAY QC’s and on one unforgettable night, TINY TIM.

Several of Gene’s roots-drenched songs have been used on the soundtrack to television and feature film, including FX Network’s “Justified” and “Sons of Anarchy” ; the 2012 thriller “The Tall Man” starring Jessica Biel, and the 2013 release “The Killing Season” starring Robert DeNiro.

December 2012 brought the release of Gene and the band’s latest all-original CD, “Untrained” an album celebrating the roots of contemporary Americana with 12 original songs that evoke the romantic sweep of 60s pop, classic C&W and the raw untamed spirit of early rock & roll (including holiday tune “Christmas Lights” ).

City Rhythm has been dazzling audiences for many years with a distinct style and sound that has been praised by audiences and critics in both their hometown of Philadelphia and around the world.  Their stellar horns, rockin’ rhythm section, great arrangements and versatile vocalists create extraordinary music. Under the direction of Pete Spina and Nick Vallerio, the band’s talent and love of music shines bright.  They’ve been honored repeatedly with music awards in many diverse categories.

The depth of City Rhythm’s play list is truly astounding, and the musicians sound quite at home in all genres of music. The band is well know for doing fabulous shows at music festivals, concert halls and nightclubs, demonstrating the mass appeal of their sound. They often create presentations focused on specific styles or artists.  Theme shows include tributes to big bands like Basie and Ellington, vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, blues legends like Ray Charles, and more.  The “Music to Spy By” concert (with movie and TV themes) and “Holiday Style” show (with Christmas favorites), are two very popular performances. City Rhythm’s performance credits include an incredible list of venues and events.

They have entertained at weddings and corporate events in every major hotel, country club and music venue along the east coast.
The band has been featured at major events, nightclubs and festivals in cities throughout the USA, including notable venues in Philadelphia (Kimmel Center,
Mann Music Center); Atlantic City (Trump Casino, Borgata), New York (Lincoln Center, Highline Ballroom); Boston (Faneuil Hall, Swing City); Washington, DC (Clarendon Ballroom, Glen Echo); Tampa (Savoy South, Heritage Village);San Francisco (Sweets Ballroom, Biscuits & Blues Club); Chicago (Chicago Summer Festival), and others.

City Rhythm has developed a strong base of fans in Italy as well.  They have completed seven tours of the country, with successful shows in cities such as Rome, Florence and Venice, and at festivals in Umbria, Sicily and other provinces.
The band has recorded several successful CDs, including:  “Goin’ to Town” (1994), “Swinging Blue” (1997), “City Rhythm Strikes Again” (1999), “Sounds of Hope” (2001) and “Vibrant Tones” (2005). “Vibrant Tones” featured renowned jazz artist Joey DeFrancesco on the Hammond B3 organ.

It’s extensive airplay earned a spot on the national jazz charts for 18 weeks and landed the disc in Jazzweek’s List of the Top 50 CDs for 2005.  Since their start in 1985, City Rhythm has become a popular and successful group by putting their personal stamp on the music they love and a heartfelt energy behind all their work. For those that have experienced the band, that’s what has created the unmistakable “City Rhythm sound”.

At age 16, Ellen’s love of dance began when she went square dancing with her parents. She later studied Country Dancing which included Texas Two Step, Line Dancing, Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Waltz and Cha Cha. From there she branched out into Ballroom Dancing.  She has been in two performance groups, the Sundancers and the Lindy Hoppers, She has won several Jack & Jill contests over the years in West Coast Swing and Two Step. Although an accomplished dancer, Ellen thinks her main skill is making dance fun for her students whatever their level of accomplishment....particularly for those who are newcomers to the world of dance.

Glenn Crytzer Orchestra will be performing this evening.
Beginner swing dance lesson at 7:30PM. The band go on at 8PM and end at 11PM.
No partner is necessary and beginners are always welcome.

Band: Glenn Crytzer Orchestra

image
The Glenn Crytzer Orchestra (formerly known as “Crytzer’s Blue Rhythm Band") is a swinging big band performing the music of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Their repertoire includes Crytzer’s transcriptions of famous and lesser known arrangements by artists like Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Chick Webb as well as his original songs and arrangements, written in the vintage style.

The band has performed at events and venues including Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Nights Swing, the Rainbow Room, Lindy Focus, the Seattle Lindy Exchange, and Camp Jitterbug, and they were the winners of the 2011 Washington DC Lindy Exchange “Battle of the Big Bands.”

In 2009 the band released their debut album entitled “Chasin’ the Blues.” The record includes three original songs composed by Crytzer (Chasin’ the Blues, Dickey’s Blues, Rachin’ in Rhythm [sic]) as well as 9 more original arrangements of classic songs. Recordings from this record have been used in a number of films and major network TV projects and are particularly popular amongst producers of ‘period’ programs.

Glenn’s goal with the orchestra is to create a new, old big band. Rather than trying to re-create music exactly as old bands played it or to modernize it, Glenn writes and arranges to allow the personalities of his musicians come through a filter of the swing-era. The band never updates their sound by including post war technology like individual mics, drum mics, ride cymbals, bass amps, electric keyboards, or stage monitors. The result is what sounds like a brand new swing band from 1941!

Original Concept by Paul Kelly
Orig. Direction and Choreography by Lynne Taylor-Corbett
Directed by George Pinney
Musical Direction by Terry LaBolt

Dance takes center stage in this influential musical that launched popular TV dance shows like Dancing with the Stars & So You Think You Can Dance. An all-singing, all-dancing evening of entertainment, Swing! features a mix of new and classic songs and over 30 tour de force dance numbers – some comic, some romantic, come nostalgic, some sexy.  Swing! also features spectacular vocal performance, while the entire show is driven by the dynamic sound of a hot neo-swing band.  In addition to several original songs, Swing! features classic, high-energy, Duke Ellington, “Count” Basie, and Benny Goodman hits like “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.”

The Buzzards will be performing this evening!

NOTE: Palumbo and Cunningham were previously scheduled for this date, by change happens. This is a change from what was posted on our Spring 2017 postcard.

Band: The Buzzards

image

From the Buzzards web site....

The Buzzards are a rockabilly band out of Long Island.

Besides inciting riotous mayhem and general debauchery (not to mention occasional nudity), the Buzzards have performed at every rockabilly hot spot, including the Rodeo Bar in Manhattan and the Blue Comet just outside of Philly.

They are the house band at the Bayou in Long Island and performed at the Gold Coast Casino in Las Vegas for the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend four years in a row. They were rewarded with a standing ovation each year.  They have performed at the Indy Rockabilly Rebel Weekend, the Heavey Rebel Weekender in North Carolina, and Rock n Rods in Philly.  They performed for the Rockabilly Hall of Fame many times, most notably at the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s first sold out concert, in Memphis, TN.

They are the band of choice to open for national acts and received outstanding praise for their performance with the great Scotty Moore. Scotty even came out to the diner with the Buzzards after the show.

The Buzzards’ CD, “The Grand Buffet,” is still available.

BOOGIE WOOGIE, TRADITIONAL BLUES, SWINGIN’ CLASSIC JAZZ STANDARDS, BALLADS AND MORE!: The Gail Storm Band does it all with Storm on keyboards and vocals AND her phenomenal sidemen-and women! Gail is a true performer as she reinterprets the classics and delivers the message directly to your dancing feet.

Gaye Adegbalola of “Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women”:

“Gail embodies the special ‘joie de vivre’ of a blues woman....Her boogie treatments make me want to shake my bootie, but the slow tunes hit me deep in the gut....On her debut CD, Just the Blues, she captures that joy, that special spirit...it becomes contagious to the listener!”

Gail Storm is a New York based singer/songwriter/pianist who performs in NY as well as on the national and international circuits. Her blues stylings embrace the root music she cherishes and provide a refreshing frame to other genres, such as classic jazz, pop and original compositions. Though Gail draws her musical influences from traditionally-based performers such as Meade Lux Lewis, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, and Louis Jordan, many of her fans compare her to modern day performers such as Diana Krall and Marcia Ball. The “Storm” is known to have a “heavy left hand” as demonstrated by her strong, rhythmic bass lines-particularly evident in the “boogie woogie”. Repertoire ranges from traditional blues and boogie woogie to swingin’ classic jazz standards, ballads, pop, and originals thrown into the mix.

Ms. Storm regularly performs in a wide variety of venues (solo or as bandleader) and has radio, film and television appearances to her credit. She has opened for Maria Muldaur, Henry Butler, and Bakithi Kumalo (of Paul Simon ). She has shared the stage with greats such as Charlie Sayles and Sarah McLawler. As bandleader, Gail has had such notable sidemen such as WyCliffe Gordon, Jerry Weldon, Toby Walker, and Adam Rapa. In addition to her performance schedule, Gail also leads multi-media music themed presentations (eg “Women In The Blues”, “Tribute to Carole King”, “The Essential Blues"), conducts Music and Art Workshops, and provides music lessons. She has been on staff at the award-winning Augusta Blues & Swing Week.

Discography includes her trio studio recording:  “Just The Blues”, a live sextet recording “Live At The Vail-Leavitt”, and a jazz collaborative work “Duets”. She is currently working on releasing a recording of original work in 2013-stay tuned!

The Buzzards will be playing at the Moose Lodge this evening.

Shannon and John will teach a beginner East Coast lesson at 7:30PM to get you on the floor. At 8PM the band will be playing some of their great rockabilly swing.

We had originally planned to teach the Shim Sham but our instructor isn’t available this month.  We will reschedule the Shim Sham lesson for later in the year.  Variations of the Shim Sham started in the 1930’s involving complex tap steps.  In the 1980s, Frankie Manning created a version of the Shim Sham for swing dancers.  If you travel around the world, you’ll find swing dancers doing Frankie’s Shim Sham.  Click here for a YouTube preview of Frankie Manning and Erin Stevens doing the Shim Sham

Ignore the date information, it’s only here to get this into the new feed.

Alive and Kicking is a feature-length documentary that takes an inside look into the culture of swing dancing and the characters who make it special.  Incorporating clips from the life of Frankie Manning, Norma Miller and many others we see the American roots of this unique art form as it has expanded around the globe.  This file is available on demand from various sources.  You can see some videos from the movie at:  http://aliveandkickingfilm.com/videos/ Shannon and I rate it 4 Happy Feet.
