Saturday, Jun 10, 2017 • Michael Arenella’s 12th Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island •

Posted by Tom on 05/21/2017 • Permalink

Jazz Age Lawn Party, now approaching its 12th year, is the world’s original and largest prohibition era inspired gathering. The event started as a small gathering in 2005 on NYC’s Governors Island, and has since grown into one of New York City’s most beloved events. This historically sold out event attracts thousands of time travelers each year, who come together to discover the music and zeitgeist of the 1920s.Consistently selected by the New York Times as one of the year’s most memorable events, Jazz Age Lawn Party offers a unique, interactive opportunity to relive one of the most colorful and formative epochs in American history.

The least expensive Saturday tickets are sold out, check the Sunday date for more availability. Lot’s of people dress up in their best Gatsby era attire.

Band: Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra

Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra is an ensemble steeped in the hot-dance band tradition of the Roaring Twenties. Their size ranges from a full 11-piece orchestra to smaller incarnations. They play their “Hot-and-Sweet” music anywhere that fine and eclectic tastes meet.

image

The Dreamland Orchestra is authentic. Arenella transcribes by hand their entire repertoire from period recordings. Their delivery, as well as their instruments, attire, and equipment — are faithfully accurate. Arenella’s strong yet vulnerable baritone lacks pretense or sarcasm. He treasures each lyric, and has faith in the songs he sings. Even the most optimisic Tin Pan Alley tune has a disarming quality in his hands.

Though certainly anachronistic, the orchestra’s presence invokes the vibrations of something unmistakably timeless. While authentic to a “T”, Michael Arenella prefers not to be labelled a recreationalist. He takes an antiquated template and infuses it with the immediacy of the present. Spontanaeity is what gave the original music of the era its magic, and it is also the primary ingredient and imprimatur of the Dreamland Orchestra.

image

His men are dapper dandies; hair pomaded and shoes shined. They are based in New York, which with London were the halcyon capitals of decadence. All of this allows them to capture the essence of what this music and times were all about: joy, romance, modernity, and possibility.

Band: Ellen McCreary

image
At age 16, Ellen’s love of dance began when she went square dancing with her parents. She later studied Country Dancing which included Texas Two Step, Line Dancing, Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Waltz and Cha Cha. From there she branched out into Ballroom Dancing.  She has been in two performance groups, the Sundancers and the Lindy Hoppers, She has won several Jack & Jill contests over the years in West Coast Swing and Two Step. Although an accomplished dancer, Ellen thinks her main skill is making dance fun for her students whatever their level of accomplishment....particularly for those who are newcomers to the world of dance.
