TGIF @ BROOKHAVEN: March 9th, 2007

(Place: Brookhaven Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York; see “Directions to BNL” below)

This coming Friday, March 9th, Magda Schoeneich will give lessons in “Intl. Cha-cha” from 7:10 to 9:30 pm, with a short food break at about 8 pm.

After the lessons, general social dancing will follow up to 11:30 pm; Digital DJ dance mix - Ballroom, Latin, Swing, etc…

Schedule:
7:10 - 8:00: Dance Lessons, “Intl. Cha-cha, Part 1”,
8:00 - 8:20: Dinner Break (Cold hero buffet, coffee, etc.) (heros include one vegetarian),
8:20 - 9:30: Dance Lessons, “Intl. Cha-cha, Part 2”,
9:30 - 11:30 pm: Open dancing with digital-DJ general dance mix

General Admission:
$15 per person! Covers everything!! Includes dance lessons, cold food buffet, and social dancing, etc. ($8 after 9:30 pm - just for the dance social).

BNL Social & Cultural Club (BNL)

The BNL Social & Cultural Club holds weekly dance socials (TGIFs) and workshops at the North Ballroom, Brookhaven Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory every Friday evening from 7 to 11:30 pm.

Unless otherwise noted, workshops and lessons are from 7:10 pm to 9:30 pm with a food break in-between, followed by open social dancing up to 11:30 pm at the Brookhaven Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York.

Cost per person: $15(members)/$20(non-members), or $8/$12 for social dancing only without the lessons; members rate applies also to all Bera members with BNL ID, SDLI members with ID, students with school ID, and all subscribers of the Social-L list and the Yahoo DanceLovers group. (Special events have different rates).

Dance socials are open to the general public, but require a photo-id at the BNL front gate.

Dance Magic Ballroom (Dance Magic)

US ballroom champion Giny Rae and partner Peter Sciurca have been teaching ballroom dancing to many people on Long Island through their instruction at Brookhaven National Lab and Stony Brook University. They also teach dance at their ballroom studio in Saint James. Check out their website for their social dance parties (typically Friday, Saturdays and Sundays).

Giny Rae - Owner and Artistic Director
A member of the Dance Educators of America (DEA), the National Dance Council of America (NDCA), and the Professional Dancers Federation (PDF), Giny Rae has over 20 years of experience as a social and competitive dance instructor in American, International, and Cabaret styles of Danceport. She has competed and performed nationally, internationally, and on television. Her students have earned junior, amateur, and pro-am championships, and Dance Magic has won several studio awards. Her leading corporate client is the Ballroom Dance Club at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Giny has been Adjunct Professor of Danceport at the State University of New York - Stony Brook, and is also the Head Coach of the SUNY - Stony Brook Ballroom Dance Team and Club.

Giny Rae also has over 20 years experience as a competitive professional dancer in the Latin, Ballroom, and Cabaret divisions. She also holds the degree of “Member with Honors” from the North American Dance Teachers Association, qualifying her as a Championship Level Competition Judge. Her competitive accomplishments are as follows:

Peter Sciurca - Owner and Business Director
After studying at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center, Peter returned to ballroom dance, and, in 1992, he and Giny Rae formed their professional parnership, and in 1997 they married. A member of the Dance Educators of America, National Dance Council Association, North American Dance Teachers Association, and the Professional Dancers Federation, Peter holds several teaching certificates in the arts including, Communication and Theatre, Dance, and Musical Theatre Arts. As a volunteer instructor at SUNY Stony Brook, Peter has taught ballroom dance to the university students and is also the Assistant Coach of the Stony brook University Ballroom Dance Team. As partners, Giny Rae and Peter are Empire State Ballroom Classic Champions. Peter has also appeared on television in the pilot and promos for Dennis Leary’s “Rescue Me”, and is a professional firefighter with the New York City Fire Department.

Alexis Andrea - Instructor
An accomplished dancer and the daughter of Giny Rae, Alexis has returned from performing with the London based production of “Simply Ballroom”, at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.  Alexis is a graduate of the Performing Arts High School in Syosset, New York and holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  She has been President of the Stony Brook University Ballroom Dance Club and Competition Team and has won many awards during her competitive career.  When she is not traveling, Alexis teaches several classes at the studio.

You're Invited!

Join a friendly group of people for a mix of East Coast Swing, Savoy Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Balboa and some Ballroom dancing. No partner is needed and beginners are welcome.

Every Tuesday Evening

Beginner dance lessons start at 7:30 PM with dancing between 8:00 PM & 10:30 PM. We meet at Blacksmith Tavern, 197 Terry Road, Smithtown.

Admission on non-band nights is $4 for members, $5 for students and $6 for nonmembers. Slightly higher band nights.

First Saturday of Month

We meet at the Smithtown Historical Society's Brush Barn. Beginner swing lesson at 7:30 PM, with dancing between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM.
